At first I was not sure that I would like this book. There was some icky stuff between Isabelle and her brother Charlie...but I persevered and fortunately, it did not go as far as it could have and I read on. This was an interesting book. I can describe it as a gothic novel, with ghosts, incest, twins, death, romance and the like. ...less

Read this book. Buy this book. My mom wrote it over 10 years ago when she was struggling to get my nephew to put his clothes on for school. This is a perfect book for parents, friends, grandparents or anyone who has tried to get a child to do something that they will not do. My husband also is the illustrator. Hope you like it!...less

I probably never would have read this book for several reasons, but my mother-in-law talked about it so much and practically forced it in my hands, that I felt I should read it to gain an opinion of my own.
The book is an almost unbelievable story of a woman who escaped with her eight children from the FLDS compound in Colorado City after 17 years as one wife among seven to an incredibly abusive and power hungry man.
I am not a fan of personal account stories for several reasons. I feel like personal account stories are always the crowning project after loads of therapy. This was no exception. And personal account stories are always so biased. Go ahead and shoot me, but even in this account I could read between the lines and see that there may have been times Jessop might have been just as monstrous as the other wives and children or mentally unstable. But those things were minimized and the spotlight fell on the horrific tyranny of her husband and the entire community. Still, she was a victim and overcomes enormous odds. For that she must be applauded.
Beyond that the story particularly disturbed me because it hit just a little too close to home. I know similar books have been written about my own religion, hopefully not as insane as this. Many of the beliefs that I hold with my own religion and feel are true and sacred, were referenced in this book, but they were twisted and blown so out of proportion by this fanatical religion, combined with disturbing counts of brainwashing and abuse all "in the name of God and honoring your priesthood head." It's chilling to see the monstrosity that can be committed in the name of religion and faith. If anything good came out of this book it was to remind me that I value freedom above all other things. Agency is the prime gift of God. Without it, what is the point?
The book was what I expected and I feel like I need therapy myself. ...less

I have mixed reviews of this book. It was a page turner and I enjoyed reading about how things "might" have been back then, but I thought it was a little too much "heaving" and "throbbing" for my taste. Being that the story is about Henry's mistresses, you would expect a sexual story, but I thought it would be a little more discreet. The incest thing was a little much. I know Anne was charged with it, but it was just a little icky to read about. Same goes for the birthing of incest baby. Icky. At some points I thought it was a Harelquine Romance. That said, I liked the pacing of the story and how the sisters were played against and for each other. ...less

I saw this book at the library while I was waiting for my kids to find something. I started reading it and decided to check it out. Interesting. I don't necessarily care for Rosie's writing style. She seems to be above criticism, which is dangerous when you are an artist as she describes herself to be. Actually, everyone needs to learn to accept criticism. But, what kept me reading was looking at one person's personal view of a time that was so impersonal. Rosie took a break for her kids. I can totally give her props for that. I get that she was missing things, missing them. She gets asked to do The View and accepts. She wonders if she can do it. I wondered myself at the time. She seems like someone who likes to be in control and that show was a lot of fluff. Could she contain herself? She says, no. She has a hard time on the show. She can't quite fit into the mold that was made for her. The Trump thing happens and it helps to reveal things that were there and being avoided. That I can relate to. Often it takes something negative to reveal the positive. She leaves the show and seems to be finding her life again. I feel she is a bit judgmental of others though. You know. Barbara Walters never asked to be her mother and that is the role that Rosie seems to try to fit her into. Mothers have faults too. In the end that is what Rosie figures out. She still seems to be so perplexed over her mother's death. As a child of a parent who died, there is a point where that is not what defines you and it seems like she is still ascribing to that. So, not a bad read, but not that great either. I would recommend it if you have a flight somewhere are a pool to sit next to. ...less
