I'm embarrassed to say that I only started reading Lovecraft recently but I don't think I would have enjoyed his creepy tales of eldritch horror as much if I had read them when I was younger... it takes a sense of historical perspective to realize how radical his stuff was. He was a man ahead of his time but it may be hard to see it since so much of his style has been co-opted by those who came after. Stephan King, Mike Mignola, Sam Rami, Metallica (to name but a few)… books, comics, movies, music… all borrow, pay homage or steal from his Cyclopean talent.

My one complaint about this collection is that it is missing my favorite Lovecraft story, "At the Mountains of Madness."

Remember: Cthulhu fhtagn!
Is it appropriate for me to review my own books? Ah, what the hell...

I really liked this book!

The story: Separated from her family on the way to the Monster of the Year celebration, Terrabella Smoot finds herself on an adventure of goofy proportions. On the way, she will meet up with loose-lipped dips, sneeze weasels, and even the Monster of the Year himself, Lord Thonk, the Ghastly, as well as the titular unsung monsters.

Things what it is like: Monsters Inc. meets Where the Wild Things Are visits Fungus the Boogeyman has lunch with Chuck Jones's Warner Brother's cartoons.
As a kid, I loved the monsters.

As an illustrator, I love Sendak's character designs and coloring.

As an designer, I love the way the illustrations get bigger and bigger as Max takes his journey to where the wild things are then get small and small as he returns home.

As a writer, I love the simple clarity of the narative.

And, as an adult, I still love the monsters.
