Don't read this book when you're hungry! The descriptions of food are simply gorgeous, from the way the author describes the perfect apricot, to the delights of freshly made mozzarella, to rustic and delicious Neopolitan dishes. Capella provides an interesting view of occupied Naples during World War II. The weakest point was plot/characterization -- for example, the characters discussing politics in a partisan camp outside Rome seemed rushed and tacked-on-- and the strongest element was setting. I can't decide if the food should be considered part of the setting or as a character, it was described so vividly!
Overall, an entertaining, easy read....less

I've never read a book where tea (and the 19th century tea industry) factored so prominently--it was really interesting.
Great writing, decent plot. Better characterization of the female characters than the male characters, but this wasn't a huge detraction for me. Good description of setting, from chilly Edinburgh to the difficulties of a long sea voyage to the lush (but dangerous?) Indian landscape....less
