I wish I could give this book 2.5 stars. My goodness. It's a bad sign when I look forward to the space break in between scenes.

With the right author at the wheel, this book could be wonderful.

The author's characters are boring, none of them very likable or visible. Nothing memorable or truthful here. The artist character is cringe-worthy. The mother works at a bookstore, but I don't really see her as a bookseller, maybe an investment banker. The gay dad dates a Black man, who sadly and predictably, remains the invisible misfit. The insane child is simplified, although I'll take simplicity over glorification any day.

There's a horrible part in the book when the mom searches for her teenage runaway son. I told someone that if she "instinctively" finds her son, I'm going to be so sickened by the ridiculousness of it all. Guess what happened? There's even a reference to breast milk!
