I am not surprised that secret got blown--as far as I can see, it is unmistakably King. This book may be vintage but it doesn't feel dated at all, neat since it was first published in 1979.
The pacing was so different too. I saw the movie first so I was surprised that the reader gets the info on the accident about 12 pages in. At first, in the movie version, I thought the main character was detached from everything but slowly I realized he just couldn't express himself. I think he does carry the weight of the experience but internally. It comes off as apathy half the time. We should remember this next time we encounter a seemingly apathetic, non-verbal teen--that kid could have the weight of the world upon him! The movie version did bother me in terms of the overly dramatic death scene, with the victim moving. Do you think that really happened or did the kid imagine it later? I did like the movie but it took me awhile. I almost gave up on it.

I was on a committee that gave it an award a few years back.
