I believe this book is a good encouragement to anyone with bipolar disorder to TAKE THEIR MEDS every day. It shows how even a psychiatrist who knows better can fool herself into believing she doesn't need her meds when she starts to feel better and acts normally.
Also, I could really relate to her story about feeling not at home in her own brain when she was first experiencing bipolar disorder. I felt exactly the same way -- it was an "aha" moment for me to identify with someone else on this level and to feel that I wasn't alone in it.
The third main thing I got from this book is that there is a difference between one's brain and one's mind. This terrible disease is devastating biologically to the brain, but it cannot touch the actual mind. That explains why one can be a genius (and often is one) and have this disorder. It also explains why when I was experiencing my first mania episode I knew something was wrong (but didn't know what) and asked someone at work to check my work that deals with patients (I am a medical transcriptionist). My mind realized that my brain was not working properly.
I think this book is well worthwhile because it bubbles with personal insight and brings you into the life of a delightful soul who is making her way trying to cope with this devastating diagnosis. ]]>
