A "liberal agnostic empiricist" who is "proud to be a semi-observant, bacon-eating Jew," Chabon offers accounts of grappling with the complexities of modern manhood -- from the dreaded "drug talk" with one's children to the double standards inherent in male parenting -- all propelled by the shimmering prose that won him the Pulitzer Prize. Chabon is not the first writer to find humor in feckless attempts at home improvement, but he is probably the only one capable of locating its source in Rudyard Kipling's "code of high-Victorian masculinity, in whose fragmentary shadow American men still come of age." As winning as Chabon's meditations are in these essays, many of which were first published in Details magazine, contrarians may detect a whiff of the much-loathed Hipster Dad persona, especially when he reveals that he and his son own matching vintage Dr. Who T-shirts (ouch). Chabon is so wise and generous-spirited that one occasionally wishes he would crack and come out in favor of schoolyard fisticuffs, say, or turning his son's future over to the Marine Corps.
--From the Washington Post, October 21, 2009(less)

I gave up halfway through and sold it on Amazon. Chabon is boring and seems bored by his own experiences. There are moments when he tries to reach an emotional point or an elegaic tone or some profound reveleation, but instead falls flat. And it seems his experiences are so "priviledged" that I couldn't relate, e.g. one of his supposed failures was a scriptwriting job for a film. How many people can relate to that? The usual territory of fatherhood is covered here in the usual ways, i.e. fathers fake their abilities in home repair and family roadtrips, and can't be completely honest with their kids--how disappointing.

Call this work a Gen-X version of the Cosby sweater, though Cosby was never this self-conscious or self-centered.

You basically quoted my thoughts exactly in your criticism of this book. So many times I thought Chabon loaded up on the details to the point that it actually took me out of the story, and caused me to ask, "Do I really need to know this? And this?" And he laid the whole "escapist" theme right in front of us instead of being subtle about it. I felt insulted that Chabon felt he had to spell EVERYTHING out. And yes, the rape scene...why was that included?

Just finished this last night, Kurt, and I'm with you regarding the final third. I'll have a lengthy review posted shortly, but my immediate thought is the final chapter should have been left out entirely. I sense Chabon fell in love with his characters and couldn't let them go. Also--He needs an editor.
