Riddled with errors that actually teach the wrong material, but if you are made aware of these and avoid them then the book is fine.

Clear descriptions and mechanisms (multi-coloured) help with studying.
Recommended over my other Organic textbook (which sucks big ones).

Occasionally unclear and frustrating in its verbosity.

Still better than the professor at explaining portions of the material, so I can't complain too much.

Science textbooks tend to get very pompous once you reach a certain level, and many of the passages should be rephrased to make the material more approachable and comprehensible.

I've fallen asleep on this a couple of times. By no means an easy read.
There was a reason that Bean was a secondary character in the Ender's game series.

His character is virtually perfect in this novel. His minor flaws are those that made him less in tune with other people. Like an autistic savant he fails to connect properly with those around him, with the exception of Nikolai, but that's dismissed later in the novel for reasons I can't discuss here without ruining the book.

But it's hard to like him for the exact reason he is not chosen over Ender to lead. He's simply not a very likable character, and as intelligent as he is, as great and interesting as his plans may be, he's stiflingly robotic. In Ender's Game all of the decisions were calculated and organic. Ender was human, relateable, fun. Bean is none of those things.

This novel is missing the humanity that made Ender's Game and the subsequent novels so enjoyable. It's missing secondary elements of Ender's Game that made it memorable. It's missing a decent amount of Ender (for one), Valentine, Peter, the COMPUTER GAME (which was one of the best parts of the first book) and the interactions of all those characters.

The characters described and introduced for this novel are not nearly as exciting as those from the original series. We're stuck with the cast-offs in this one.

The Rotterdam adventure at the start of the novel was too long and grew tiresome after awhile. Okay Card, Bean's a genius, we get it. Move on please.

To top it off Bean is a whiny Mary Sue character.

But damn you Card, you can write and that's why I like you. The writing alone is worth a couple stars.

Lam's novel of medical intrigue is inspiring in that its characters are wondrously perfect students. If only I could adopt their system of memorization, but I simply don't have the willpower.

The book is wildly entertaining, but the chapters should be read over a period of time. Each story needs to be digested and savoured.
