Her family spent a year eating only foods produced within 75 miles of their Virginia farm, producing most of their food themselves. Good information about growing, preserving, and preparing food, when to plant what, how to prepare for the winter, raising chickens and turkeys, etc. Fascinating and fun to read.(less)

The meat industry is unsanitary, dangerous to workers and consumers, anti-union, and generally disgusting. The USDA protects the corporations against consumers, not the other way around (big surprise). There is poop in the meat. Fast food serves as a starting point for an examination of what exactly is wrong with our society - it's ruled by corporations making huge profits at our expense, in collusion with the government, and most people have no idea what's going on but just thoughtlessly keep consuming the garbage they're selling us.(less)

This book presents overwhelming evidence that the Bush and Cheney decided to go to war in Iraq a long time ago, even before 9/11, and details exactly how they strong-armed intelligence officials into delivering any scraps that could be distorted into evidence in favor of the predetermined decision to invade. They lied, they covered up their lies, they got away with it, and it is happening again.(less)

Do you think the U.S. government's domination by business interests and the wealthy is a relatively recent development? Think the founding fathers would be appalled by the current situation? Think Republicans are responsible for tax cuts for the rich? Think Democrats are the party of the working class? Think JFK was a pretty good guy? Think U.S. involvementin WWII was morally motivated?
If you want to find out why you're wrong about all these things, if you want clear evidence that our government was created precisely to protect the interests of the wealthy elite against the working people, and is currently functioning exactly according to plan, if you know that the two-party system is a con game but aren't exactly sure how it works, if you want to understand what 9/11 and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq are really about, then you need to read this book.(less)

Richard Dawkins, the evolution scientist, makes a compelling case for atheism. Some of his arguments: It is not true to say that the question existence of a supreme being who created the universe is beyond the reach of scientific investigation; a scientific argument can be made that the probability of such a being's existence is very close to zero. It is not true to say that even if God doesn't exist, we may as well believe in his existence; in fact such beliefs have caused immeasurable harm throughout history, and moreover, the very proposition that faith - unquestioning belief without evidence - is a virtue to be respected is inherently dangerous and destructive.
This book is not intended to convert religious people to atheism; it is meant to solidify the latent atheism of agnostics and pseudo-theists among intellectuals, and to begin eroding the stigma attached to atheism.(less)
