I haven't been reading much lately because I have been so sick. However, last week, I got the bug to pick up a book. I have had this on my shelf for a long time and decided it was time to read it, since I will be seeing the film adaptation within the next few weeks.
I know the violence and abuse in this book is shocking - but what's so sad about it is that it isn't isolated or just some grotesque figment of the author's imagination. I work with women, who are survivors of sexual violence, that have stories very similar to the narrative of Precious Jones. In this book, Precious learns to read and write, finds her voice and claims her own narrative. I know that in my own work with women, this is an extremely powerful act, as it is for Precious.
I found there to be a great deal of hope and empowerment within these pages and instead of walking away from the book with a sense of doom and hopelessness, I felt inspired.
