It's more about watching fiction at work across time and many many books. Where does detail orginate, for example? Track its rise through literature and time. Wood takes it all apart to show the legacy of Flaubert, for instance. I hadn't realized his indirect influence. Read it. You might see fiction working in ways you hadn't, understand where certain aspects of our style hail from. On Ruskin, that's another issue. He's literally teaching you how to draw and since it would take thousands of hours to actually learn according to him....I don't need to say more. Except that the book speaks to the patience that making art requires and that is essential to remember. ]]>
