An excellent summer-read, complete with exquisite imagery, appropriate symbolism and fun-filled tragedy. As a cross between Marquez-esque stream-of-consciousness and Heller-ish dark-military-comedy, this first novel by Hanif tries to accomplish a lot, but starts to deliver only as it ends, leaving much more to be desired for than simply what it starts with.

This compilation of essays on education reform is divided into three parts: Realities, Theory and Practice, each part further sub-divided into its logical sections. Each and every essay is more than a delight to read, and every single one is lined with thoughtful, researched and experienced ideas. The section I liked best was on building a new, genuine, and *relevant* curriculum, which, not surprisingly, also engaged me to re-evaluate my own concepts of what should be worth teaching.

Though these essays were written and compiled in the 60s, it is obvious that many of the ideas in them have still not been administered at large, at least in the United States. Not that what is contained in this text is the golden solution to all of our education problems, but the fact that they do not even come up for debate when discussing education reform today is unfortunate, in the least...and a tragedy in the long-run.

This book contains a lot of good information on the dark side of language, but in really bad structure. Wajnryb may be good with words, but she is less talented with sentences, paragraphs and chapters. It will require some discipline to actually complete the book without being meandered into the author's run-off thoughts, anecdotes and ideas.

Ignoring the willy-nilly (and rather annoying) organization of the book, Wajnryb has a lot of information and analysis to impart, and it is useful information and analysis. One just wishes that it were presented in a more seamless, to-the-point, and organized manner.
