Definitely enjoyed this couple's story, based on John and Elizabeth Bunyan. Their trying life situations were difficult to read at times thanks to the reality of the social environment, language, and religious climate. The book oozes authenticity; I ...more

I might not have picked up this book if I hadn't met the author online since it's not my usual genre/setting. It's intense, high-action, and gripping. I gasped aloud a time or two. I can't say anything about the end because this is a no-spoiler revie...more

So hard to read the less-than-beautiful in the beginning. And the middle. But what a wonderful statement on how forgiveness can help us move forward, as can the mercy to not hold anyone forever to what is only a part of their story.

There is no denying how gripping this series is. I just don't love being convinced to turn the pages because I'm so desperate to remove the characters from the horror of their story. It certainly worked, though. I can't wait to finally read the end.

" Such a decadent read! The faith woven through the book was a happy surprise and made the journey that much richer.

I love the transformation Elisa goes through, that she's a resilient and unconventional lead. I can't point to a single cha... "

“It's been my experience that you can nearly always enjoy things if you make up your mind firmly that you will.”
L.M. Montgomery, Anne of Green Gables

Richard Linklater
“I believe if there's any kind of God it wouldn't be in any of us, not you or me but just this little space in between. If there's any kind of magic in this world it must be in the attempt of understanding someone sharing something. I know, it's almost impossible to succeed but who cares really? The answer must be in the attempt.”
Richard Linklater, Before Sunrise: A Film

“Don't wait for a light to appear at the end of the tunnel, stride down there and light the bloody thing yourself.”
Sara Henderson

Elizabeth Gilbert
“Look for God. Look for God like a man with his head on fire looks for water.”
Elizabeth Gilbert, Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman's Search for Everything Across Italy, India and Indonesia

James M. Barrie
“It is the custom of every good mother after her children are asleep to rummage in their minds and put things straight for next morning, repacking into their proper places the many articles that have wandered during the day. If you could keep awake (but of course you can’t) you would see your own mother doing this, and you would find it very interesting to watch her. It is quite like tidying up drawers. You would see her on her knees, I expect, lingering humorously over some of your contents, wondering where on earth you had picked this thing up, making discoveries sweet and not so sweet, pressing this to her cheek as if it were as nice as a kitten, and hurriedly stowing that out of sight. When you wake in the morning, the naughtinesses and evil passions with which you went to bed have been folded up small and placed at the bottom of your mind; and on the top, beautifully aired, are spread out prettier thoughts, ready for you to put on.”
James M. Barrie
