This is I think the most amazing, imaginative book I have ever read. It's ambitious and the author strikes the perfect balance between being playful and a serious critique of our society. The language is rich, and DFW manages to evoke an entire alternative future/present that never, at any point, removed me from the plot. Its insights into people are profound, and its sense of humor is wicked, thoughtful and never off key. Best. Book. Ever.

I went through a very brief Marguerite Duras period my junior year in college. I discovered her as I was trolling the stacks of the library, trying to find something to provide a distraction from my post-Europe depression. I think I read The Lover, and I definitely read a book of hers I liked called Black Hair Blue Eyes. I seem to recall their were actually two "Lover" books, The Lover and Indochine Lover. Thanks for reminding me of this!

This was a lot of fun and a very quick read. The illustration is well done and the panels often reveal little treats for the observant reader. There's even a little social critique. Well worth the time you'll need to read it, and perhaps revisit it later.

This was an amazing read. One detail I recall vividly was thinking about how different the world was when Moore mentions at one point in the end this exciting new music coming from Jamaica called "dub." It made me think about the differences in the pervasiveness of culture in our media age, but also how the 80s could be viewed so differently by someone using a different lens. It made me think about what aspects of being alive in this millennium will be remembered differently, and if in fact we are losing things that we haven't yet even realized we lost. In the strong comic book/graphic novel tradition I grew up with, this level of cynicism is a welcome feature, and here it is raised to its apex. If you love comic books, or even like them but want to find put more, or if the recent string of comic-inspired movies interests you, you should know the importance of this novel cannot be overstated and the impact it has on you personally will, with any level of consciousness, be significant.
