I must admit to mad love for Athos, cemented when he was brought to life by the too-manly-for-words Oliver Reed in the definitive movie version by Richard Lester. It's a long book, meant to be savored, not devoured in one sitting. It goes into great detail of the politics and manners of the time so if you're easily put off by that kind of historical information you may find yourself woozy. Dumas is a master at making the reader see what is going on; his prose brings each ordinary situation to vivid life so you can almost smell the horses, hear the crunch of the dirt beneath the Musketeers' boots, taste the wine they inhale with such reckless abandon. This is my crack book, the one I turn to again and again.(less) "
