The Hunchback Assignments is one of the funnest steampunk novels I have read. A 14 year old, shape-shifting hunchback and his companions save the British government in Victorian England. While Modo deals with the trauma of a deformed body, he has little time for self-pity while sneaking through sewers, climbing buildings, and using his vast intelligence to thwart the evil plans that use children to take down the government. I look forward to reading more books about Modo solving the various assignments this ingenious author develops for him. ]]>
Having already read Hunger Games, I chose another book. It was so good though, I would have NO problem reading it again and discussing it with this group. ]]>

Mudbound is a depressing, disturbing, and all too true look at life in Mississippi at the end of WWII. What causes a man to accept his father's hatred and somewhat agree with it? What causes a woman to cheat on her husband? What causes a country to treat a soldier as a man on foreign soil and then as a "boy" when he returns to the South? How do soldiers come home from the atrocities of war with the knowledge of what they have done and seen and live a "normal" life again? Can hope endure and strength return?
Mudbound attempts to pose some answers to these questions with well-rounded characters, a solid plot, and a gift for simple, straight forward story telling. I can't say I enjoyed this book, but I am very glad I read it. ]]>
