Xenophon-esque adventure in a vaguely Greek/Conan world. Good characters. Simple story, simply told.

Boy, did this book get lots better! The trite phrase "an adventure of blood, torture, and nifty bonesnapping" is totally applicable, and yet the characters who emerge, their passions and weaknesses, their pride and their strength, make this an outstanding book. Not outrageously coarse or vulgar, this powerful story comes to a logical conclusion. It doesn't cry for a sequel, but one is clearly possible.

I really enjoyed this book.

HN Turtletaub is, of course, Harry Turtledove, of alternate history fame. Under the Turtletaub name he writes historical fiction, principally the adventures of Menedemos and his cousin Sostratos, ship captain and traders on "the wine dark sea." The novels are not exactly plot-free, but they contain a wealth of information about life in the 4th century BCE. I just love them and eat up all the detail on the history of the day. I don't think many others do, but if you like this era, like to read about trade in the Med, and want to follow the adventures of a ladies man and his much more staid cousin, you just might like this series, too.

The second. book in the series

I hope you enjoy it! I am such a big fan of Neverwhere (my local book dealer sold me the English paperback edition as soon as it came out--years ago) that I bought the BBC discs as soon as I saw them. Burt and I have watched it several times. Mrs. Hop even likes the show.

Gaiman ought to have a category of his own. This book, a children's book, tells the story of Bod Owens, who is orphaned as an infant and adopted by the ghosts of a nearby graveyard. Bod grows, faces challenges, interacts with his ghostly and lively worlds and finally takes his Hero's Journey. An absolutely fabulous read!
