Jenkins' (et al) report examines the various ways which young people become members of “participatory cultures,” as consumers and creators of information, and how these cultures inform a need for schools to incorporate new media skills into the curriculum.

Various sources have wondered whether students become skilled users of new media on their own, outside of the classroom, by participating in popular culture activities. To some extent this is true; the book gives numerous examples of teenagers who have excelled in non-curricular technology projects and developed successful careers. (Right now, you might be using a web browser developed by one of them.) Proponents of the separation of “online (recreational) life” and “school life” further suggest that schools should not spend valuable time instructing students in skills which do not apply concretely to traditional curricular goals.

The authors of Confronting the Challenges of Participatory Culture provide three concerns which support “pedagogical interventions” between students and the participatory culture of new media. These are the “participation gap” (whereas unequal access to technology will decide who excels and who does not in the future); the “transparency problem” (distinguishing perceptions of the world as created by the media); and the “ethics challenge” (how we are to behave in virtual interactions with other people). These concerns should not be ignored, and in fact may be (in some form) already in existence within traditional curriculums. However, schools have been slow to adapt to the demands of new media literacies, and participatory culture programs continue to enjoy the most success in small classes or afterschool groups. Library media specialists, who (should) consider themselves fluent or knowledgeable in new mediums of communication, can play an important role in how schools view technology as an educational tool. One can absolutely lead by example, and a compelling and enriching framework for media literacy can have a significant impact on everyone’s desire to learn.
Krazy Kat in color...such a thing of beauty. For one thing it makes you notice the scenery, which is outrageously creative and surreal (made me think of Outland, which probably cribbed from Krazy Kat like, well, crazy). And the design, the color schemes, the personality of Herriman's line...and his language, of course. WOW. As Jeet Heer sez in the introduction, the man was a "magpie" who sampled freely from both high and low cultures of early 20th century America. I don't think any comic strip ever got more Twain-ian.
