I sit here restlessly, folding
my legs, stretching my arms.
I’ve been in this seat too long.
In one state of mind, I’m writing an essay.
I imagine the Circus Maximus, twelve chariots racing away.
I look up at the columns, taller than the people, the trees.
I see the domes, great overturned bowls of life.

Flipping the page back over, I’m flirting
with a girl who loves me.
Five months later, and I still don’t believe her.
I don’t believe that she’s real enough for the earth.
She’s too unreal for me, so she must be a goddess.
Yes, I’m flirting with the goddess of the universe.
I don’t believe that she could be.

She reminds me of when I used to hallucinate
that a girl was sleeping beside me.
She’d turn over, put her arm around me, and sigh,
but I’d wake up to an empty bed. No, I don’t believe
that she could be. I don’t believe that it could be.

I’d wake up in the middle of the night
feeling like dying,
and I’d reach out into the dark for the one
who loved me…
No, she never was there for me.

I imagine the dome roof of the Pantheon exploding
from all of the people.
It falls to the ground to cradle the earth
and bear fruit, becoming part of the landscape.
The goddess brings me this bowl of life
and sets it at my feet.
I don’t believe that it could be.
The goddess is flirting with me.
