If you don't mind the subject, then this is a great book to read. The setting is the western USA. The author includes death in the backcountry due to mistakes; natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods and so on; animal attacks; human killers, including one that reads like a slasher movie in a remote area; strange places such as caves, while paragliding, scuba diving and so on; historical deaths such as mining accidents, collapsing dams, etc; and people who survived in spite of the odds. I mostly relished all the incidents described. ...less

Somehow she winds up solving murders. She has two cats of her own, and cats play a prominent role in the stories. This is a fun change of pace book--brain candy....less

This is probably one of the most important books there is on how to shift from negative to positive interactions with others. If it were used universally, our world would be a better place in which to live. It is written in a mostly non-textbook way, so it reads like a story. The setting is a two-day group session for parents of problem kids who have just entered a two month outdoor program. The reluctant parents eventually have no choice but to look at themselves first for where change can take place. The concepts are simple on the surface yet not easy to carry out in practice. Because the content is a composite of various situations, it comes across trite and preachy at times; but the message is compelling nonetheless. Also, the teachings can apply to any situation from individuals to couples to parents to friends to co-workers to groups to organizations to countries and so on....less

I am hooked on David Baldacci and can hardly wait to read the next Camel Club novel. Who would have guessed that a group of fringe characters, some of whom are homeless, would stumble upon a conspiracy to kidnap the president. There is much more to this book than the description on the book jacket because Baldacci has a way of inserting fascinating facts, subplots and characters into his books....less

These stories, by a Nobel Prize winner, "span the lifetime of a quintessential wandering Jew--born in Buczacz, Poland, living in Germany, and finally settling in Jerusalem--and they bring to life the full gamut of the modern Jewish experience in fiction."
At first I expected to read just a few of the stories, but as I finished one, I wanted to read another. So I wound up reading them all and enjoying the way Agnon weaves stories, often with a subtle tongue-in-cheek, dry sense of humor. If you want to get a taste of various aspects of Jewish life in the 20th Century, then this book is a good place to start....less

This book was enjoyable because it felt to me that the author was talking me as he told his story. It takes place in WW I Germany and is told by an Austrian Jew. The narrator tends to ramble at times, yet his musings don't seem to be on a tangent even when he does wander off because that's what people do when they are telling you a story. I didn't understand the symbolism until I read the translator's comments after finishing the book....less

What a fun and informative book this turned out to be. If you are looking for a change of pace yet quality book to read, check this one out. You'll find out that there are no fortune cookies, chop suey or broccoli in China. And did you know that the Chinese did not invent fortune cookies (read the book to find out who did), that a Chinese restaurant owner in New York invented home delivery, and that the Chinese and Jews have something in common when it comes to food? Read the book to find out more than you ever imagined about Chinese Food....less
