Night Mirror

Silver discus thrown by the hand of God
across the dark sea slowly
to embed itself night by night into the night
until only a sliver remains.
Then pushing, pushing through the birth canal
of chaos into inky nothing,
seeking warmth or milk or freedom.
This hard-working silence born of eons
serves unwittingly as mirror to the glory
of the sun.

This barren rock built of billions
of explosions shines the brilliant
light of life's eternal furnace:
so far away, yet returning daily.
The night mirror never complains;
never cries itself to sleep as I do;
never worries that it may be outshined;
only pushes onward carrying
its own egomaniacal desire to
extinguish the brilliance if only
for a night.

To remind us all what lurks behind
the mirror's false surface and
the reflection we see there
night by night
