Another fab book! Just as in Prickly Business, I enjoyed reading about Avery and Dylan’s relationship, all their ups and downs, joys and frustrations. The complexity of their relationship makes it feel realistic and believable too.

Avery is just ridic

What struck me most about the book, was that the setting descriptions were rich and detailed enough to make us feel grounded in the story, but not too detailed as to ever bore us! This is very inspiring to me personally, as setting description is one ...more

Sadly, Crush just didn’t do it for me. The romance was…almost instant and progressed way too quickly, in my opinion. Hope isn’t a bad person, I think, but I didn’t really like her and I found her boring. Her sister Joy was more interesting, but I dis ...more

"3.5 stars. I had my doubts when I started reading this book. I didn't really want to read Jim's story. But I was surprised by how much I ended up liking this."
Work Boots and Tees by Jo Ramsey
"This was the book with the most depth in the Deep Secrets and Hope series. It revolves around Jim, the bully and criminal from books 1-3. But instead of trivializing all that Jim went through and giving him a quick path to redemption, the author s..." Read more of this review »

Both this and the sequel, Ball Caps and Khakis, were enjoyable and rich in meaning. I love all the explorations of social issues, such as the fallibility of the legal justice system; and philosophical issues like whether you can judge a person’s char ...more

Aw, this was such a nice book! Manny’s narrative voice charmed me all the way through; he’s so sweet, open-minded, brave, and adorable. So he’s definitely my favorite character.

Jim’s case was fascinating, and I do sympathize with him, but I don’t kno

This was so cute and sweet! I especially enjoyed the scenes where we got to see the dogs; they are ridiculously adorable and were the best parts of the book for me, haha. A very interesting problem happens in the story, but I won’t elaborate due to s ...more

“It's more complicated than that. I know them. They're not evil or cruel. They're not even smart. Hurting them, it's like hurting children.”

Suzanne Collins
“Our romance became a key strategy for our survival in the arena. Only it wasn't just a strategy for Peeta.”
Suzanne Collins, Catching Fire

Suzanne Collins
“Peeta sighs. "Well, there is this one girl. I’ve had a crush on her ever since I can remember. But I’m pretty sure she didn’t know I was alive until the reaping."

Sounds of sympathy from the crowd. Unrequited love they can relate to.

She have another fellow?" asks Caesar.

I don’t know, but a lot of boys like her," says Peeta.

So, here’s what you do. You win, you go home. She can’t turn you down then, eh?" says Caesar encouraging-ly.

I don’t think it’s going to work out. Winning...won’t help in my case," says Peeta.

Why ever not?" says Caesar, mystified.

Peeta blushes beet red and stammers out. "Because...because...she came here with me.”

“I wish Peeta were here to hold me, until I remember I'm not supposed to wish that anymore. I have chosen Gale and the rebellion, and a future with Peeta is the Capitol's design, not mine.”
Suzanne Collins, Catching Fire

Suzanne Collins
“Finally, Peeta turns to Pollux. "Well, then you just became our most valuable asset." Castor laughs and Pollux manages a smile.
We're halfway down the first tunnel when I realize what was so remarkable about that exchange. Peeta sounded like his old self, the one who could always think of the right thing to say when nobody else could... I glance back at him as he trudges along under his guards, Gale and Jackson, his eyes fixed on the ground, his shoulders hunched forward. So dispirited. But for a moment, he was really here.”
