well written, ambitious, but at times it seemed so contrived. i just couldn't shake this feeling that rushdie was trying too hard. other writers have tried very hard to write "epics" as such, and they've never seemed outwardly as desperate as the prose in this makes rushdie seem. i don't hate rushdie, or hate this book. behind much of the techniques and attempts at amplifying magical realism there lies a very good story that is tied into a truly riveting history and retelling. the children of destiny factor along with the writing makes this a good read. I just feel, however, that it is the kid in the front of the class raising it's hand hoping to be noticed while Joyce sits there charmingly smoking a cigarette and getting the answers right anyway, while drunk. In terms of "magical realists" ive been charmed more so by the small amount I've read so far of 100 years of solitude then I have by this book in its whole.
