E.B. White is a masterful essay writer. He takes some of the most simple topics and turns them into meaningful pieces that stick with you long after you've read them. Even when he's writing about something like the Model T, a cultural artifact that has long since dropped out of sight, he writes about it in such a timeless way that I still relate to his thoughts and feelings. I stayed up pretty late last night because I couldn't go to bed until I finished this book! From the first chapter, Krakauer grabs your attention and quickly leads you through an amazing adventure that remains compelling even though you know the outcome from the start. It's heartbreaking to see what happens to these climbers who are so dedicated to their dream of climbing Everest. From page one I was so impressed by Wolff's writing -- the way he crafts scenes and takes the reader along with character descriptions and dialogue is amazing. The childhood Wolff was unlikeable in so many ways, but the adult Wolff does a great job of stepping in and exploring how his "greenness" led him astray, and how he struggled with things he wanted to do but couldn't do, or things he knew he should do but just couldn't bring himself to accomplish. It's an interesting character study, in addition to just being an engaging story. ]]>
