I hate giving a book 2 stars... but, it was really just ok. Bolano is one of the hottest writers right now... but not because of this book. I tried this one first because it's short. Not a good reason to pick a book, I know. But after reading 800+ pages of the LBJ bio, I thought something short would be nice for a change.

This book gave me the distinct feeling that I didn't know enough to appreciate it fully. I'm not giving up on Bolano, though. There were little bits in here that really struck me as intersting and insightful-- like the idea of a pro-Pinochet, Opus Dei priest teaching Marxism to the Junta. Pretty trippy thought.

Saw this movie this weekend and gleaned the following:

Basically there are two kinds of "dream" guys: 1) skinny, pale, little, soulless, soul-sucking monsters who feel compelled to protect (poor little sex starved) young women from themselves, and 2) hormonally ravenous studly DAWGS who are totally hot ( if hairless in their human form), who also feel compelled to protect you from themselves... what's a grrrl to do?

The only other alternative is the milquetoast dweeb who throws up at action flicks....

I'm thinking this book will rile me up.... prepare for angry feminist screed.
