No, it really isn't the same concept in this book. He's not out preaching his new "religion." He's mostly just a bored teenage kid who's tired of being told he has to believe what his parents believe.

Very well-written and interesting look at a young man's perspective on religion. Jason Bock is the product of two very religious parents, but he, himself, is not a believer. Partly on a whim, partly to get a reaction, he invents a new religion that worships the town's water tower. He's very creative about it, and he quickly gathers a small group of converts. He admits that he doesn't really believe that the water tower is a god but also points out the many church-goers who are not necessarily faithful or believers.

I especially liked at the end of the book where Jason's friend Shin tells him that you can't really understand something until you believe in it.
