I couldn't finish this. It was a really good book about poetry fitted into to the not-very-interesting maunderings of a real sad sack. I wish Baker had just told us what he knows about poetry and poems which is obviously a great deal, and he had some insights and observations new to me. This could have been a great short nonfiction book. I'll say no more since you haven't read it.

I have loved Baker's other books, and I like his style of very minute observation. The Mezzanine is one of my top favorites. And I've always thought he had a terrific imagination and ability to plot, but I didn't see that here. I'm sure it's some shortcoming on my part--I've missed some vital aspect, but I bogged down in the middle, skipped to the end, didn't think much progress had been made, so I stopped. Disappointed.
