Okay, I'm still sticking to my Jay Farrar is better guns, but this has helped me develop a respect for Wilco that was dubious at best before I got my hands on this book...the history of Uncle Tupelo, and the story of the Mermaid Avenue sessions (and Tweedy's subsequent falling out with Billy Bragg, leading to a split tour) are just damn fascinating. That said, the book has still done NOTHING to explain to me how one can assassin down the avenue......less

This is a fascinating piece of nonfiction. It follows three stories that unfolded simultaneously in 1893 Chicago. First, it is a bout the World Colombian Exposition, the Chicago World's Fair; all the work and planning involved in getting it built and operating properly, and all the infighting that occurred between members of the Fair Committee. The second is the story of a physician and druggist who also happened to be a very accomplished murderer of single women, having some 15 to 25 murders attributed to him. Finally is the story of a schizophrenic man who has delusions of gaining political power by endearing himself to the mayor, who has no idea of his existence. Highly recommended!...less

Honestly, this is really a 3 star book at best, but I allow an extra as this is the book, that 7th grade assignment book that I began reading out of obligation and felt for the first time the literary corner of my 12 year old brain shudder to life, cough...in short, the book that first made me say, "Oh, I get it!" The second was Of Mice and Men....less
