A good read for the beach. Sort of a Grisham style....nothing especially intellectually stimulating but he tells a good story. About a war vet drifter who takes offense when he is run out of a small town in the midwest and sets out to discover what the town is hiding. Commutes to the town of "Despair" from the neighboring town of "Hope". This book is a classic read but an all day sucker. Dickens does a masterful job of character development. The book is a expose on the workings (or lack thereof) of the English Court of Chancery in the 1800's that was intended to resolve disputes over estates, wills and trusts but in actuality was a self perpetuating litigation machine that consumed all the resources of the estate in legal costs and fees leaving the potential beneficiaries without any funds and ruining there lives and mental health in the process.
