I was a tad peeved by the chapter about how a guy must not be into you if he's not actively pursuing you, and I agree with you that there are definitely men who appreciate a woman who takes the initiative. However, that was the only part of the book that I felt was relying on stereotypical gender roles to make a point. Even the chapter about marriage leaves it open to interpretation and states that some people are just opposed to marriage in general. I consider myself a feminist and was not greatly offended by this book. If anything, I found it made me feel stronger and more in control of my dating life. In my experience, most men are too scared to flat-out tell a woman they're not into her, and this book provided me with the signs of this so I don't get too emotionally involved in someone who doesn't care about me. Sure, this isn't the case with every man, but those who actually have the balls to come out and say they don't like you are, as the author would say, the exception.
I didn't feel like the book was telling me I would be perpetually unhappy and alone until I find the man of my dreams. Instead, it left me with the feeling that it's better to be single and independent than to settle for anything less than I deserve in a relationship. I think a lot of people end up in unhappy marriages because no one has told them that. ]]>
