Hm. Really interesting look at a teen with OCD. I'm not entirely sure everything the book tried to tackle actually worked--there's a lot going on here--but there is an interesting twist, and the story kept my interest overall.

More thinking required

The few chapters seemed great, but I quickly lost interest after pages and pages of tedious conversations and pointless encounters. The ending was at least marginally interesting/different, but the way it was executed left me impatient and indifferen ...more

Reread for the umpteenth time, because I'm wretchedly ill and in need of a comfort read. This is the coziest book, filled with hikes in the snowy woods, fudge-making, cats, sweet gingham dresses, mothers who greet you after school with fresh chocolat ...more

DNF around 100 pages. Such an interesting concept, but man, is the main character a whiner. I get it, he's supposed to have this crushing guilt and regret (view spoiler) and presumably he grows ...more

I had a feeling five pages into this book that it was going to make my Top 10 list for the year. I was right, because it's also my first 5 star book of 2015! Freaking looooved this, it's unlike anything I've ever read before.

3.5 stars Because it's Sarah Dessen, this is a very pleasant read. But it's not what I'd consider one of her standouts, since it doesn't have moments that quietly hit you the way her best books do. Still, Mac and Sydney are cute together--Sarah write ...more

Strong 3.5 stars Cadie does something incredibly stupid--she goes on a road trip with two boys she's known for half a day (and a distant friend). I also think it's almost too easy to guess the culprit.

And yet because the writing and characterization

Hm. People are loving this much-hyped book, but I have rather mixed feelings about this one.

Things I liked:
-- awesome premise, obviously
-- a world very different from what we're used to
-- a few intriguing conversations between women (Shazi and Despi

Diane Setterfield
“People disappear when they die. Their voice, their laughter, the warmth of their breath. Their flesh. Eventually their bones. All living memory of them ceases. This is both dreadful and natural. Yet for some there is an exception to this annihilation. For in the books they write they continue to exist. We can rediscover them. Their humor, their tone of voice, their moods. Through the written word they can anger you or make you happy. They can comfort you. They can perplex you. They can alter you. All this, even though they are dead. Like flies in amber, like corpses frozen in the ice, that which according to the laws of nature should pass away is, by the miracle of ink on paper, preserved. It is a kind of magic.”
Diane Setterfield, The Thirteenth Tale

Charles Dickens
“It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done; it is a far, far better rest that I go to than I have ever known.”
Charles Dickens, A Tale of Two Cities

Oscar Wilde
“We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.”
Oscar Wilde, Lady Windermere's Fan

Beverly Cleary
“If she can't spell, why is she a librarian? Librarians should know how to spell.”
Beverly Cleary, Ramona's World

Madeleine L'Engle
“You have to write the book that wants to be written. And if the book will be too difficult for grown-ups, then you write it for children.”
