I love the idea of someone accidentally starting a cult. There's brilliance in the prose. At first, it reminded me of a modern day, more accessible version of Umberto Eco's Foucault's Pendulum. And thank goodness, it's not remotely like the Da Vinci Code. It has mystery, suspense, conspiracies, corporate intrigue, anti-globalization activists, new age mysticism, for-profit religions, Christianity, and a little bit of a love story, all with very funny pop culture references, and a potential new self-help meme (What Would Jim Rockford Do?). What I like is that so often you find characters in fiction where characters are completely despicable and loathsome, making the read frustrating and thin (giving the reader a sense of moral superiority, but little else), or else the protagonist is beyond heroic and stultifying. In Stunt Road, instead, there's great character development, wickedly incisive commentary, and a gripping story line about people who seem very real, approachable, likable, and yet, at times you want to take them by the shoulders and say "LOOK WHAT YOU'VE GOTTEN YOURSELF INTO! STOP IT! STOP IT RIGHT NOW!" Southern California itself is its own character in the book, and even if you aren't familiar with the landscape, you get a very real sense of the SoCal life experience. It goes beyond the cliché and examines the very real efforts people go through to feel a sense of community and belonging in the vast cultural wasteland, nestled within the even larger lush natural environment. Mose clearly has a love-hate relationship with the region, and he works it to full advantage in this novel. I was hooked from the first chapter and couldn't put it down. Incidentally, if this book catches on, we may well see some enterprising charlatan "invent" Horokinetics-- it's really that plausible.(less)

Story is interesting (especially as I am reading Infinite Possibilities - Mike Dooley, at the same time). I don't like the overflow of scientific information. Will finish it soon...

Is it me or is it the book? Can't seem to get through it. Probably because I don't feel it is written "for me". Has anybody read this? Could you give me some feedback? Thanks a million! Happy Holidays!
