Adorable, witty, and fun- but I think this book probably has a very narrow audience of children who are advanced enough in their reading and young enough to appreciate the subject.

Lots of promise in this debut-- the beginning was strong, the friendship between Gloria and Carol was beautiful, and Gloria's voice and character are strong. But once she showed up to Geek Camp, everything got heavy-handed and meandering.

3.5 stars. I think her writing is beautiful, and I love sprawling stories that take place over decades in people's lives. But the characters never quite felt lived-in enough to me, which is what I really look for-- the feeling that I know these peopl...more

A fast and fun read, but the voice sounded really forced at times, where it was very conscious of "this is exactly how I think 12 year olds talk" and didn't feel authentic. But very cute and enjoyable otherwise.

“Darling,
You asked me to write you a letter, so I am writing you a letter. I do not know why I am writing you this letter, or what this letter is supposed to be about, but I am writing it nonetheless, because I love you very much and trust that you have some good purpose for having me write this letter. I hope that one day you will have the experience of doing something you do not understand for someone you love.
Your father”
