As I was reading this book I frequently stopped and reread sentences, paragraphs, entire chapters. Maybe it was just to foster my growth as a Buddhist, but it led to an easy understanding of a well laid out book that traces the history of Buddhism and the elements of it's form in Zen Buddhism. The history is thick but easy to follow if you're careful and willing to take your time. And it lays an excellent foundation for understanding. I read this as a kid for fun and then in high school for a class and I enjoyed it both times. And recently, when I decided to reread it, as an adult, I enjoyed it again, but I had a much different perspective of Holden. He struck me as very sad. I could see how he was stuck in this impossible position between one dead brother and one who left and trying to figure out how he fit in the world, especially with all the weight of those happenings. There's a chapter in there, I can't recall which one, that very clearly sums up the entire book to me and it just strikes me as fantastic writing.
