LOL - I'm glad I can tire out the torch-weilding mob for you.

I've read a bunch of books lately that people either love or hate. There doesn’t seem to be too much middle ground. I'm not going to be at all surprised if this one becomes a major motion picture with a host of teenage girls getting tattoos of the name "Weston" like they did with "Edward".

I started out with Nancy Drew before realizing most of the girls in my class were reading ND while most of the boys were reading The Hardy Boys. Pssh! I crossed the divide and read BOTH!

I nearly went crazy trying to find all the Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys books. The public and school libraries had patchy collections; combined it was frustratingly close to complete. I started to keep a list. Then I learned there were spin-off series, the equally infinite Files/Casefiles and I think there was a Nancy Drew Summer Love series or some crap like that.

I remember this particular book because this is where I stopped reading them. Instead of the charmingly light fluff mystery or cheesy Scooby-Doo-like suspense, they killed Iola! This was almost 20 years ago, but I ended the book feeling like the Hardy boys had started off on a quest for vengeance, that now that they've used guns and were fighting terrorists they would no longer be the nice boys-next-door who were entertaining, useful, and generically good-looking, leaving you at your door with a tame peck on the cheek. The newly serious HBoyz were out for blood. The bubble burst and I realized all the hundreds of books had the same storyline. Ah, the newly awakened feeling of betrayal. Bye-bye, Ms. Drew, Mr. Hardy, Mr. Hardy. Thanks for keeping me reading.

The cover of this edition is not what I remember...I think there was a jeep with a gun mounted on the back. One Hardy boy was at the wheel, the other was at the gun, both were squinting with the speed of the driving. Huh.(less)

The Pace is book 1 of its series. It tells the story of a young boy born January 12, 1900 in London and now currently living in California, attending Berkeley at 19. How? well as you've read above the certain boy named Weston III is an Immortal, that's right people he is Immortal, not in a paranormal way, so you guys can cross out Vampire, Werewolf, Shifter and even Demon. He is made by science. He was a homophiliac until Dr. Oliver Thomas transfused him with cold-serum in the year 1916. I would love to tell you how this works but then where's the fun in that :)

Weston's history was fascinating and lonely at the same time. He is also completely dreamy that includes his looks and how smart, and sweet and caring he is, his wealth and his awesome collection of cars and his million dollar home, even his complex nature is appealling. Definitely fictional boyfriend material. (lol) But his heart only belongs to one person and one person only, her name is Sophie, one could say that she is a bore, as she evades socializing and a true loner. But I love her content nature and her heart. As you progress reading about her and Weston's story you'll actually see how intirguing her whole life is. I had an overwelming sense of de javu, I've read something like this before and I might as well say it. The story has a striking resemblance to another series, if you read that you'll know what I'm talking about. But that's about the only comparison. It was written beautifully and truly has a world of its own, trust me it took me there, it kept me glued on its pages until I finish the book.

You'll read the signs of true love, how their relationship blossomed in front of your eyes.

Shorts described his past and his present in clear detail it felt like I was watching the scenes unfold in front of me instead of imagining it, the breath taking view of the over look and his house, the campus, even the Mr. healy's book store. In short I got too much into it. It was truly a beautiful love story the one that never ends. But like all love story their relationship was tried many times, will both of them live to survive this time?

A highly recommended feel good book with no cheesy context or pretentious hidden mystery. A solid freshman start for a new book. I was really impressed. Congratulation Miss Shorts, I'll eagerly wait for The Broken Lake (Book 2) to be released August 19, 2010

(less)
