My biggest problem with the book is the simple fact that it is romantic drivel with the guise of a suspense novel. I loathe to inform the lovers of Ms. Meyer, but suspense implies that something is actually going to happen at some point in the story. But if you come in to the novel knowing the biggest mystery of the first half of the book – the fact that Ed’s a vampire – the book loses what suspense it could have held, leaving behind a pile of mindless, romantic fluff.
Now, under normal circumstances, I am not a staunch opposer of fluff. I can get behind something cute, squishy, and plotless on occasion. The difference is that the fluff I read is well written and under 500 pages. I understand that this novel is aimed at an age demographic a decade or so below mine, but that doesn’t mean that their view of what good writing standards are needs to be this low. There is plenty of young adult literature out there that can run circles around Twilight and still be comprehensible by that age group.
And maybe it’s the cynic in me that keeps me from the real point of the book - finding the true love- but the moment I have that thought the he chimes in with “True love wouldn’t be that boring.”
I hate it when he’s right.
As adorable as Twilight makes finding your true love out to be, it doesn’t create enough tension or action to levy a plot upon. It’s 200 pages of a sickenly saccharine couple fawning over each other, declaring how much they love one another. Unfortunately, this is not the way reality works. And, what’s worse, is that this book is raising the expectations of a an entire generation of young women. It creates the illusion of finding true love and riding off into the sunset with a mind who loves you and will protect you for the rest of your life. Which is not the way that reality goes. I’m all for fantasies, just not ones that create ridiculous expectations like this. No love will be as perfect as theirs, by any stretch of the imagination. It creates standards that are nigh impossible to meet and masks the cold truths of the relationship.
Edward is nothing more than a possessor. As much as Meyer wants you to believe that the two of them are actually in love, but love doesn’t mean that the person you are in love with has to protect you from the entire world. That isn’t love, that’s an unhealthy obsession. Which, again, isn’t something any young woman should ever be exposed to. It gives the wrong impression of what a real relationship should be which can lead to heaping amounts of trouble in the long run.
In the end, this met my expectations for everything: it was poorly written, poorly plotted, and a worthless hunk of literature and I wish that I could get the time I wasted on it back.
