I'll admit to having been more dimly aware of Roger Angell than I should have given his long and illustrious career. That said, this book certainly didn't grab me. It feels of a time (and I mean quite a long time) what with E.B. White, New Yorker his ...more

This Old Man by Roger Angell
"I wasn't familiar with Angell's work before reading this collection of his stories and essays. I've since learned that he wrote for The New Yorker often (and still contributes somewhat, though he's 95). He has a huge fan base and is seen by many a..." Read more of this review »

I really wanted to like this book. I believe that there is a lot of potential in the crime/mystery genre using cyberspace as the basis for the story, but this just didn't do it for me. Perhaps Freddie just wasn't enough of a geek for me or perhaps he ...more

Yet another very satisfying John Rebus book. Rankin does a masterful job of telling a moderately complex, yet very tightly constructed story. As the best storytellers do, he is able to closely entwine two storylines to meet in the finale. Rebus exhib ...more

This is a really good mini-series. The writing is just excellent, tightly wound. When Winslow switches voices, it actually works! Boone is a complicated hero and this book has two intricately intertwined storylines that work very well. He has a bit o ...more

Well, if you're a fan of Texas music and not a fan of Ray's - you should be. And then, if you are a fan of Ray's, I think that you're going to love his book. It reflects his patter and humor on stage. It's also heartfelt as a redemption story, but in ...more

This book felt rather hokey and slapdash. Rosenfelt clearly felt the need to format the book so that it would "stretch out" to 274 pages. The device of using amnesia as the basis for the story seemed awfully forced, though the story itself held toget ...more

I found this book a bit weaker than most of the previous ones. It largely stuck to the formula of Middle Eastern terrorist bent on doing harm to the U.S. and Mitch having to cut through all sorts of political bureaucracy to stop them. I thought that ...more

Oh, it keeps you turning the pages OK and the fact that Ash is a Muslim in Indianapolis adds some interest, but, in the end, it's a pretty average read. There are plenty of corrupt cops you encounter along the way, but that's about it.

I'm not generally a fan of these look back technique books. Here we find Swagger engaged with a young reporter, Russ, in investigating the death of Swagger's father which leads into exploration of the death's of others long since dead. There's the ob ...more
