Kindle accepts two formats. One is the official Amazon format, the other is .mobi. You can convert any eBook into .mobi format and load it onto the Kindle.

Some of my books I get off Amazon.com, but I also buy them from all over the internet. Many already sell their books in .mobi format.

Yes, it is perfectly legal, it is Amazon that gave us that option. They could have designed the Kindle not to accept/read the .mobi format if they had wanted to. I just finished the Anita Blake series. I just started the Mercedes Thompson Series. I'm reading Moon Called today.
