          <body><![CDATA[Thanks for the compliment and the suggestion.  I'll look into Hayles's book.  Certainly Kurzweil's timeline for when &quot;downloading&quot; of consciousness might happen is ludicrously soon if it is possible at all(add 50 to 100 years to his now 20 year timeline), and if AI's have taken over before then what would be the point anyway.  I also think Kurzweil doesn't quite understand how complicated the problem is (e.g., hormonal feedback affects on brain states and thus on the proper functioning of consciousness--in other words, it's not just about copying brain states), but if Hayles is suggesting the idea is in principle impossible, well, I'll have to be convinced of that.
