It's been a long time since I've read a book as bad as this one. I hate writing negative reviews on books I've read. The last few books I've read by GA Hauser has been pretty good, so I was a little surprised how much I disliked this book. I had a hard time finishing it, but I did, and I think that was an accomplishment within itself.

My main problem with this book was the heroes. Danny and Donny are twins who are very selfish, self centered and just downright cruel. They decide that picking up gay men has become boring, so they make a bet that they can pick up and convert a straight man. Since they are identical twins and no one can tell them apart, they make the decision to play this game by courting the unsuspecting man together. That way both twins can have the victim and the victim has no idea he's dating not one man, but two.

I hate to say this, but I hated this book. I didn't think there were any redeeming qualities about the twins and the poor guy they seduce had no backbone whatsoever.

If I could give it less than 1 star I would.

There are several things that went through my mind when I read Brier’s Bargain by Carol Lynne. I was excited to see that it wasn’t going to be a ménage based relationship, and the premise looked interesting because Brier is mentally challenged. I hate to admit that Carol does stick her neck out there when it comes to writing about less than perfect heroes. She has a way of making me feel for them and have a special place in my heart for them because they are so unique and heartfelt.

The story was good. I liked Brier and Jackie. I thought that some of the issues they go through as far as Brier needing to be more independent for himself and from his brother was very realistic. Jackie was very good with Brier. He is encouraging without pushing him too hard and it was obvious that they really loved each other throughout the book.

The problem I had with the book is when I bought the book from Total E-bound books; it was listed as first in a series. There isn’t any indication that this book continues from another series from another publisher. If I had known this I wouldn’t have read it out of context like I did. From the first chapter I felt somewhat lost. It’s obvious that there was a lot going on before Brier and Jackie’s story and I felt like I was always one step behind because I hadn’t read the previous book. I thought this was somewhat unfair. It took away from the story and I was disappointed because I was lost throughout the book.

What stinks is I really love a series and I really liked this book. I just hate being left behind.

This book is hard to rate. I liked Brier and Jackie, but I would have enjoyed them much more if I hadn’t been lost on and off throughout the book. I decided to rate it a 3 because of that. I’m planning on trying to find the first book, Bram’s story, and read it (if it’s not a ménage) and maybe after I read it, I’ll change my rating. I do think that Total E-Bound publishing should have let readers be aware that the Bodyguard series is a spinoff of another one, but that is just my opinion.

Retired quarterback, Damian Grant, doesn’t really expect much when he attends the funeral of his former lover and teammate, retired wide receiver, Jake Fields’ father. Though he’s never stopped loving Jake, their relationship ended eleven years ago when a firmly closeted Jake broke up with him when he was being traded to another team.

Jake’s father was a large part of why he broke up with Damian all those years ago. Jake’s father was a racist bigot and Jake did not have a good relationship with him, but he always tried to please his father.

Since his retirement, Damian has come out as gay and had a lover who he cared about very much. He lost his lover to a car accident.
Jake is happy to see Damian again after all these years as he has never loved anyone else. He’s lived a life of lies in his small town. The attraction and affection between Damian and Jake didn’t die. Damian visits with Jake after his father’s funeral, but Jake’s aunt lashes out at him, causing Damian decide it is best to leave.

Later, Jake goes to see Damian at his hotel and the two end up making love and spending the night together. In the morning, Damian is hopeful their reunion will be permanent, but the unexpected appearance of someone from Jake’s hometown sends Jake running once more.

I loved the fact that though Damian really loved Jake, when Jake broke up with him all those years ago, he moved on with his life and even fell in love again. He was a very strong, compelling character, but I really loved Jake, too. And I loved when Damian would call him "sweetheart"


I loved this book! It was a very fast read and the characters were great. I can’t really decide if I like Damian or Jake better. They were both complex, interesting characters and there was so hot loving between the two. Another thing I liked is they are both older, well, thirty-eight, so they are not young.


I highly recommend it.

If you are offended by interracial love, male/male sex with chocolate sauce, or a beautiful love story, this book will not be for you!

Eleven years later, Damien shows up at Jake's father furneral. Jake's father was a bigot, and Jake tried his whole life to be the son his father wanted, to the point of hiding his sexuality and breaking things off with Damien, the only man he ever loved. Now Damien, who came out once he quit football, is back and wants to rekindle their romance. The real question is however, is Jake ready to have an open relationship with Damien?

Jake is this big, muscular ex-football player. Totally gorgeous guy, but he's lived so long in the closet that he isn't aware of his sex appeal and he isn't sure if he can live his life as an openly gay man. His Alabama hometown doesn't welcome homosexuals with open arms, and Jake's afraid everyone will turn his back on him if he comes out. Unfortunately for Jake, his worries aren't completely unfounded.

I think what I loved most about this story was Jake and Damien's obvious love for each other. They were truly meant to be together, and I felt it from the moment the 2 met on the page. They were sweet and tender and really hot together! Damien is patient and strong. He understands why Jake is the way he is, and doesn't get really upset when Jake freaks when the 2 men are found together by a woman from Jake's hometown. Jake's a guy who is physically strong, but has never used his strength to defend himself. Even when a punk picks on him, he walks away. He's used to hiding, not standing up for himself. Yet, he stands up for Damien, the man he loves, when Jake's aunt shows herself as a racist.

And in the end, Jake found strength within himself when he really needed it. He went after what he needed. Damien didn't make it easy for him, nor should he after the way Jake bolted on him, but he is Damien and loves Jake. So of course, there is a wonderful HEA.
