“Allowing yourself to stop reading a book - at page 25, 50, or even, less frequently, a few chapters from the end - is a rite of passage in a reader's life, the literary equivalent of a bar mitzvah or a communion, the moment at which you look at yourself and announce: Today I am an adult. I can make my own decisions.”
Sara Nelson, So Many Books, So Little Time: A Year of Passionate Reading

Mikhail Bulgakov
“What would your good do if evil didn't exist, and what would the earth look like if all the shadows disappeared?”
Mikhail Bulgakov

Jhumpa Lahiri
“That's the thing about books. They let you travel without moving your feet.”
Jhumpa Lahiri, The Namesake

Dorothy Parker
“This is not a novel to be tossed aside lightly. It should be thrown with great force.”
Dorothy Parker, The Algonquin Wits

“Be kind to everyone you meet, because everyone you meet is fighting a battle.”
Ian Maclaren

Description: This is short story I wrote for my introductory creative writing course in my sophomore year of college. It's an extolment of my all-time favorite novel, The Crimson Petal and the White by Michel Faber. It's written in a collage format, so it is broken up into sections that take place in a different time and location.

Description: This poem is a sestina. A sestina has the same six end words repeated in each stanza, and ends with a tercet that contains all six end words. There's a specific pattern to follow that tells you which end word you need to use in each line of the stanza, but I won't get into that. I began this poem by coming up with my six end words first, and then I created a story around them.
