There is good writing, and there is good storytelling, and sometimes they both happen at once. Other times, neither of them happen at all, and then you get a book like this. Paper-thin, unlikeable characters, plus ridiculous, dated descriptions and convenient plotlines the likes of which I haven't seen since my days reading Goosebumps and Fear Street books. I read this because I knew they were making it into a tv series (I'm a sucker for the network formerly known as the WB), but this is one instance in which I have to say just skip the book and watch the show. (I streamed the first couple episodes and am relieved to say it basically keeps the character names but makes the characters themselves much less vapid, and is overall much more entertaining.) As for the books, those hoping for the spunky sass of the Sookie Stackhouse books or the breathless swooning of the Twilight series will be disappointed.

Cute and clever, if a little morbid, as in the first book. Like Roald Dahl and J.K. Rowling, the author has a talent for naming objects and people in ways that are funny to hear and fun to say. ]]>
