I think you're right about Updike; I'm always forgetting (while arguing with people that he was a hack) about what a superb art critic he was.  I also agree about Cheever and Welty being the best Americans.  I also really love Grace Paley, but for entirely different reasons.  Reading the short fiction in the New Yorker now makes me really depressed.  Everything feels so slight and careless.
