Unfinished Bridge
Two pillars only-
Of an unfinished bridge
Stretching across,
In sight unseen splendor,
Raging river
Of asphalt and concrete
Aluminum, steel and round rolling rubber
Gurgling in coughs and fits and spits
Of vague plumage of heady exhaust
Bleating with clenched teeth
Of changing gears.
Two pillars only-
Of an unfinished bridge:
A promise of intent
In inconspicuous incompleteness
So that strangers may,
Someday, with strange customs
And odd habits, meet
At that one point of crossing
For no more than less
Than a second
In perpendicular direction.
Two pillars only-
Of an unfinished bridge:
Abandoned promise unfulfilled
In tidy disarray of once used tools
Rusted with the slaughter of limitless potential.
Time laid waste in desolate tufts
Of brown and cancerous weed and grass
Brittle and damning and choking
Shirtless and defenseless, torn-
Impaled on sizzling skewer
Of hollow and haunted soulless midnight.
Two pillars only-
Of an unfinished bridge
As Hamlet questioning
Whether to take arms,
As in the sudden hope of rusty tools,
Against a sea of troubles swarming
In metallic glare, buzzing
Vibration of gritty muffler
And moaning cacophony of cranking motor
Bubbling and boiling oil streaking permanence
On screaming agony of rubber rending roadway.
Two pillars only-
Of an unfinished bridge.
Lay hand to handle
And crack the deep-rooted rust
Of forgotten and muted promise
With clanging kinetic of tangible fulfillment!
One against sun searing
And middling moon whipped
With stinging wind and icy rain
A soul found with soul determined
In abandoned potential realized.
Two pillars only-
And a bridge complete
One struggle less
And a whole world before
On the other side.
A triumph-
For no more than less
Than a second.
Now forgotten
As all good tools,
Such as bridges,
Are.
