A Fraction of the Whole is an entertaining if a little disjointed read. The bizarre characters and the absurd situations they create for themselves give a comical, engaging story which explores loneliness, being an outsider, father-son relationships amongst others.
It is however difficult to shake the notion that the philosophical ramblings of Martin and Jasper are nothing more than the author shamelessly self-indulging his own views. While the one-liners and isolated comments are generally amusing, some fall flat and just appear out of context and smart-arsed. I found the characters’ rants to be quite witty and essential in developing their cynical nature but towards the end of the book they just obstruct the story’s flow.
Overall I enjoyed the book - it’s funny and a unique story – but I did get frustrated with the breaks in what was otherwise a fast pace for the author to shoe-horn in his views on various social ills and how he would cure them.
