Just finished reading this sad, funny memoir from Kyria Abrahams. As far as I can tell the only slam friend we have in common is Dawn Gabriel and I would expect Dawn to be friends with such an awesome person. Some sections of this book were soul crushing but somehow Kyria seems to manage to slough off the damage with humor. What a strong lady.
The sections regarding sex are particularly revealing and sad, though at times hilarious. And the book is a valuable insight, if you find yourself studying religion, into who the Jehovah's Witnesses are.
It's hard to imagine leaving a relatively small world when you've never known anything else. But Kyria's matter-of-fact attitude towards the end of the book is in some way reassuring. You put one foot in front of the other, because what else can you do? I'm sure thousands of us are on a similar ledge, peering over it.

Having asked the one close Buddhist friend I have what she thought about this book, she advised me that it was a pretty solid introduction. I have a pretty much scholarly interest in Buddhism but the lightness of being I felt when reading this book was a wonderful thing. Whether you want to identify Buddhism as religious, philosophical, or otherwise, it is ultimately comforting and joyful, and I feel very satisfied having read this book.

I feel like it's unfair to hold other books to that standard, because Solitude is my favorite book of all time. Or maybe tied with The Master and Margarita. But also worth a read is Chronicle of a Death Foretold.
