I haven't read the Moonstone, but I have read The Woman in White by the same author. Wilke Collins was a good friend of Dickens, and wrote mostly creepy mysteries.
You should check out the movie version of Room with a View from 1985 with Helena Bonham Carter. It keeps the happy ending. Why would anyone want to change the ending of that book?
