I think this was an interesting attempt at changing up the standard fantasy storyline by adding in a detective aspect, and it worked ok. Not great but not bad. The author does a reasonable job at keeping you guessing who the real culprit is, throwing in clues here and there. And in the end it all makes sense.
However, I am not a huge fan of incorporating a lot of a-historical knowledge into fantasy settings. It might be one thing if Dubric was a scholarly wizard or used magic to gather data, but having a glorified castle guard taking evidence and looking at fingerprints was a little too jarring to me. I never got the sense that Dubric was a particularly scholarly man to know these types of things, although he was clearly intelligent and observant. Just seemed a little too forced.
