Confusing? Maybe. Tells the truth? Most of the time. A challenge? Definitely! Do you want to know what I’m talking about? I’m talking about The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain. In school we where told that we had to read Huckleberry Finn I knew I was not going to like the book.
This book was confusing. The language was from the 1850s, how am I suppose to know what they are talking about if I’m from the 1990s? The book first started off with a notice that said “Persons attempting to find a motive in this narrative will be prosecuted; persons attempting to find a moral in it will be banished; persons attempting to find a plot will be shot.” Now, if we are not learning anything while reading this book then why do people insist on us reading this? So that was a very confusing way to start off a book. This book is also on a 12th grade level; I’m in 9th grade!
“Good gracious! Anybody hurt?”
“No’m, killed a nigger.”
“Well it’s lucky because sometimes people do get hurt.”
This quote from Huckleberry Finn shows how white people looked at black people. They looked at them as less than people themselves. It shows the actual racism that went down in the south. This quote showed the truth, a thing that people do not like to hear.
Finally, this book was a challenge. When I was done reading I felt a relief. Between all of that homework plus NHD it was a surprised that I even read the book. We had to do bloom taxonomy for homework, which was very stressful we had to writ questions dealing with the book and that was hard, because I didn’t know what to put in my questions.
Overall, this book was okay I guess. It was very confusing, but it made me stronger because now I can read any type of book. I can’t really tell you if I liked the book or not because I’m still a little confused about that. So, maybe you should read the book for yourself and see if you like that.

(less)

“Man that Huck Finn book was great!” “Eh! Its alright.” “At first that’s how I felt even after I finished reading it, until I thought about it. All the confusion it had that made me re-read the story and all the grammar that I didn’t understand. Oh and the assist it gave me to help me read other books that are easier to understand.

First, I didn’t like it because of the confusion. It was a lot of parts that are difficult to understand that I had to read and read and read, sometimes I even started chapters over just to get that one little paragraph to see what it meant. Like the part that said “Yo ‘ Ole Father doan know what hes a-gwyne to do, some times he spec he’ll go way. En den sometimes he spec he’ll stay.” That part I had to read with a partner but after a while I got it.
Second, The grammar is so bad it really falls under confusing but its so bad it has its own topic. In this book the author makes a lot of grammatical errors but it fits with the characters and settings. But the author says things like, “Git up what you bout?” it started the chapter so I had to really go back and read a lot before to see what it is talking about. That helped me in a way.

Lastly, I did like the book because it was different and the difficulty helped me learn to read books that are challenging. Like this book helped me ask myself questions to see if I understood. I asked questions that could be answered in the book, half in the book and half in my head, and questions that connected me to the book.

So basically, I hated the book and the work I did but at the same time I liked it. Even though it confused the heck out of me and the grammar was horrible and they said the “N” word over 210 times but I still liked it because I learned to read better and I learned how to understand things better so if you want to do what I did and read and understand better, read the Huckleberry Finn book
(less)

“I don’t care if you leave out of here and don’t understand or remember Hick Finn…” says my English teacher, Mr. Romero. Well he definitely doesn’t have to worry about that with me because I couldn’t remember a damn thing. One thing that made me want to forget this book was the language. The language was so controversial that it just made me mad. Another thing was that I wasn’t really interested in the characters. Personally, I think that the characters were kind of predictable. But the main thing was crazy because it is the only thing that I remember. And that very memorable thing is the ending. The ending was so surprising to me.

“I see it warn’t no use wasting words — you can’t learn a nigger to argue. So I quit.” thought Huck. Now lets point out what’s wrong with this sentence. Warn’t isn’t even a word to begin with. So let’s keep score that was grammatical error number one. “…— you can’t learn a nigger to argue. That doesn’t even make sense. Like what is that supposed to mean. What is that grammatical error number two. The main thing wrong with this sentence in my opinion is that the word “nigger” is used. The alarms are going off new error, racial error number one. It seems like every page had the word “ nigger on it. I mean it’s like I can’t get away from the word in the book or in today’s world. It’s like nothing has changed.

In the book, Huck says to himself I know that what I’m doing is wrong, so I know I had to turn Jim in. But I knew that he wouldn’t tell on him and he didn’t. Now, I predicted that and it happened. He tried so hard to tell on Jim but Jim was a smart slave. He knew that Huck was going to tell on him. So he kind of used reverse psychology on Huck and starts to say things like there goes Huck Finn the best friend I ever had. And Huck started to feel so guilty he lied to the people that he was going to tell Jim on. And told them that his Pap was on the raft and he had the pox. The men didn’t want to go anywhere near the raft.

I could predict the characters and what they would do. But I would never have predicted the ending. Let me paint you a picture of the ending. Get this the widow died. Now who would predict that, certainly not me. Since the widow did and she left a will and in her will she set Jim free. So now Jim is free after all him and Huck went through. If I were him I would be happy and sad at the same time. I mean I almost got lynched. I got beat at a plantation where I didn’t know anybody. I would be so frustrated I wouldn’t know what to do.

Now that you heard my opinion maybe you would reconsider reading the book before you read it. Or if you already read the book you agree or disagree with me. But either way it doesn’t matter. Everyone is entitled to his or her own opinion. And mine happens to be that the language was controversial. The characters were very predictable. And the ending was shocking.(less)
