She does not discount the extreme value of communal worship, but she sees the sacred in the everyday. Each chapter explores a different "altar," such as getting lost, encountering others, walking, paying attention. She spends time talking aboout the prayer of hanging out laundry - prayer flags blowing in the wind. She draws on other faiths and much of ancient Christianity and the Desert Fathers for her inspiration. Sometimes I really want to meet an author and become their friend. I would love to be a friend to Barbara Taylor Brown. (less)

Its a heart warming Cinderella like story. The writing is really good especially the descriptions of the football games, which definitely had me gripping the edges of the book. It is a short book, but it can become tedious at times, particularly all the religious talk. Overall its an enjoyable, short read. (less)

On the one hand, Marx seems aware that the story is so incredible that it can carry the book, resulting in a style that seems to involve staying out of the way of the narrative (at least as much as that is possible). On the other hand, Marx fails to add much to the tension and excitement that were all-but-inherent to the story. It's a good, light read, but Marx fails to realize the full potential of the story.(less)
